I took a a wee trip on the new Govan ferry to and from the new transport museum and to be totally honest, the very short boat trip was the best part of the visit. Which comes and goes every 20 minutes.
I cannot recommend a visit to the new transport museum on a personal point of view, as I did not like it.
The first thing to hit you is the awful colour scheme. A sort of pale lime green. Made me feel like I wanted to be sick.
Then the darkness of the place. I can't understand why they light these places so dimly. Felt like I needed a torch at times to see things properly.
Never liked the idea of the cars and bikes on the walls or hanging from the roof and I was right to think this. What's the point of having things so high up that you can't really see them and enjoy them?
The most enjoyment children got was playing outside at the side of the museum where they could run through steam emitting from "stanks" in the ground. This is a deliberate thing with the steam coming out the ground and for the children who found it, they loved it.
I saw many downhearted looking faces on people who had left the building looking the same as me. Just not impressed by the building and the displays. A shame really but they should have left things as they were at the old transport museum.
And there were stuffed anmals and birds on display? I guess if they move, they are transport?
If you are going to Glasgow and planning a trip to the museum, I would suggest you cross over to the Science Centre and go on the Waverley Steamship and just sail by the museum.
Good points: I suppose the parking, it only costs £1.00 (For now) And the captain of the ferry boat giving me child price on the trip over :) £1.50 return. £3.00 for adults and
What a shame, I had heard so many good things about the old one. I had my first trip to Glasgow centre this weekend. What amazing buildings!
Comment by Kathleen Bates on July 9, 2011 at 21:59 Sometime in the next few weeks we will be taking our grand daughter there, I just hope it isn't as gloomy as you found it, but I do like the idea of the ferry. I am getting too old to keep coming up with ideas to entertain visiting Grand Kids from Canada. As she is science inclined we will go and see for our selves. Not being science minded I have no idea of what to expect. Just hope she enjoys the visit.
Comment by Margaret on July 10, 2011 at 16:35 Some people are saying the kids enjoyed it as they can still jump on and off the trams and things and they have a little place for kids to do hands on stuff. So The chidren may enjoy it.
I was speaking personally as an adult view point and comparing it to the old museum.
I think the science stuff will be at the Science centre a bit further down the Clyde. Which is also supposed to be good for the children. I can't speak on that not having children and all the nieces and nephews have all grown up with no interest in going to museums :)
Overall, the design of the building, the interior colouring, and the displays are a bit woeful as far as I am concerned.
But don't be put off going, You always have to see something for yourself and decide if it's worthe a return visit one day.
Ever thought of taking the Grandaughter to a nature reserve? They usually have fun things for kids to do looking for bugs, birds and so on. All free as well usually. :)
