Spring and the end of an era

Now it is really spring at the end of May after some days of great heat. Today the weather is cooler and there is now a northerly airflow over the country - I hope the last week wasn't our summer, especially as I spent most of it indoors and only had two days outside over the weekend. We were promised a barbeque summer last year and our barbeque was never used once because it was so cold and wet.

I am just about to leave the college where I have been studying Art and Design for the last 3… Continue

It might be green, but it's BALTIC!

It's cold .... in fact it's freezin'. I lit the fire last night and didn't feel too hot, just cozy, as if it was November. And while the sun shines, the wind is cold and my only consolation is that it might just freeze the slugs. Still today the sky was so blue that it made my eyes ache, which is lots better than a headache caused by the current political situation. I am SO sick of politics and even worse is the fact that the markets are putting on the pressure so we can have a nice stable… Continue

It's gone all green.

How lovely. Everything is green and growing greener by the second. After the winter we've just had this is more than welcome. I love this time of year with increasing light and leaves unfurling. Oh, and I had my first fix of new mown grass scents yesterday - now if only that could be bottled and sold for perfume ...... AAAAHHHHHH ...

Anyway, I planted some seeds in my scruffy wee plot today and it even rained on them - just a little to make them sprout and grow into Marigolds, nasturtiums,… Continue

Painting a landscape

I've been painting a landscape by Vincent Van Gogh. This is not something which I normally do, but this one is for an auction to raise money for art therapy for children and young people. The amazing thing is that I really got into it. my admiration for Vincent now knows no bounds. The painting I worked on is Cypresses and it is just so full of life and love of the landscape that I was almost expecting to hear his voice! I AM NOT A FANICIFUL PERSON. This was just such a surprise as I expected… Continue

Ah yes the autumn, it was beautiful this year in the Borders, if cut short by the autumn gales. Now we shiver under driech leaden skies in the back-end days of December. What was it Burns said in "Tae a Moose" ? "An forward though we canna see, we guess an fear." This is not meant to sound gloomy you understand, only a little wistful....... pretty much the feeling around now. More later maybe ...... I'm going to light the fire and toast myself for a bit and my folks will be wanting some tea and I should be painting (picture not walls!!)

Well, it's been some time since I was here. I was ill, have been in hospital and have had a miserable time all round. However, I am making a good recovery and will soon be better. Scotland is so miserable and dark and grey. Spring is like another country, hopefully not too far away. We have had lots of snow, but no pictures from me as I was in a nice warm hospital

Joy, just got your picture. Don't give up. I think you have looked very well at the foreground and have a good sense of perspective overall. I can't really tell from the painting, but if you look more closely at the leaves you might find a few colours in there which you have missed. Not bad for for a first attempt. You can always have another go, but don't give up. Do it again and compare them, you will learn from the comparison. Remember too, that you can play with colours to heighten the effect - add blue to shadows, yellow and white to show sparkle on leaves. Also go on line and look at other landscape painters to see how they do it. Finally I'd say every artist has a different way of looking and seeing and you have definately managed to put your own stamp on my photograph. Well done.

Haven't been here for a while, been busy getting better, waiting for my leg to heal and generally hibernating. Now I'm back to almost full strength so it's back to my studies with a vengence!! I just finished a picture of the Meadows in Edinburgh at blossom time and if I can find my camera I'll put it up ..... but it's supper time now and we need to eat.
