Placebook Scotland's Blog

Bit of light reading? I have the solution.

The new issue of the Scottish Natural Heritage magazine (The Nature of Scotland) is out and I have to say it is pretty good this issue. There are some great pictures and articles or a wide range of topics and projects. I just read the web version over a coffee and enjoyed it all. If…

February already

I am now sniffing out signs of Spring being on the way, winter started early this year and it has seemed pretty long and dark. I know we are not out of the woods yet (the weather guru on MFR's farming slot is threatening more snow towards the end of the week although the Met office is not) but I saw bulbs poking out along the river on the weekend ( sorry Ian I know I was meant to be paddling) and it has filled me with hope.

I have also managed a whole week of cycling to work with out…

In the News....

Charities want Government to commit to landscape

Today I found this article tucked away in a tiny corner of the BBC Highlands and Islands news site. It is about a petition which went the UK governmants urging them to consider the value of the landscape more highly and to use the European Landscape Convention to help to manage and protect it.

Now I am biased, my 'grown up job' is to…

New network, a chance to help to improve Placebook Scotland.

Hi All,
Placebook Scotland has had to change it's network plan as so there are a few changes on the site which you may have noticed.
As I am now going to have to do some playing to repersonalise the site I would really appreciate some feed back on features on the site you like, dislike or would really like to see to help me do this.
Many Thanks
Elli

Another trip - the Hebrides this time!!!!

I am sat in the offfice watching the rain bounce off the roof and the only thing keeping me cheerful is the thought of a Cetacean surveying trip I am taking this weekend. I am off around the Hebrides withthe Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust and I am very excited. not only do I get to learn more about animals I have always admired but know very little about but this is my first time going out towards the islands.
Photos will follow.

Righ an Righ

Mi dhearc da grunnan
I saw two groups
Iad thig sois luathas
They had come down swiftly
Bho am baile
From their town
Iad mosgladh riaghailt
They had arisen at the word
An ogha Nechton
Of the grandson of Nwython
Mi dhearc mor bunantached
I saw great sturdy men
Iad thainig camh
They came with the dawn
Agus ceann na Domnal Brecc
And the head of Dyfnal Frych
Fitheachan cagainn an sin.
Ravens gnawed it.

This is a poem I attempted to translate whilst working with the poverty alliance; it is by an unknown author and was among Anerin’s work The Goddoddin, the language of the day was akin to welsh. This particular poem is about the death of Donald Brecc who was slain at the battle of Strathcarron in 642.The actual site of the battle has never been identified some historians think it was near Denny however it would make more sense to place it on the plain of Mannan which lay between the river Carron and the river Avon. This particular part of Scotland is what Skene called the debatable lands which saw the Picts the Scots the Britons and the Angles all fighting for superiority. Falkirk pronounced Fawkirk is also known as Eaglais Bhreac the speckled kirk.
