A nursery school from Lanarkshire bought some digital cameras and
borrowed few more for a placebook Scotland project. The project
started with the children talking about where was their favourite
place that they walked within their town. The nursery teacher had
drawn a large map on the floor and helped the children pin-point on
the map where the places were. Next the children practised framing
a picture with viewfinders in the nursery playground and looking
for a “good picture”. The following day they planned their walk to
see if they could take in most of the children’s favourite places.
Then came practising using the cameras and uploading the pictures
onto the computer (with the children seeming to be more experienced
than Mrs. Gordon). Then the Big Day….the walk. The places the
children had chosen varied from corner shops to lanes with bramble
bushes; from play-parks to riversides that they walked by on the
way to nursery. A favourite place was the garden with gnomes
resembling snow white and the seven dwarfs. The walk took a lot
longer than anticipated and the project is still running. In the
end, teachers took some drawing materials along too. They are now
planning to look at writers who have a strong sense of place within
their stories.

“It has been a super opportunity for the children and has taught
them so many skills, from geography to IT. This has been a great
curriculum for excellence project and we plan to submit some of the
pics into the homecoming competition. Thanks to the parents who
came along to help on the walks” said
Mrs. Gordon.
