Are the Carbuncle Awards Fair?

A group to defend the honour of the towns who were named and shamed in the Carbuncle Awards, or to justify their nomination?

The Carbuncle Awards have named John O'Groats the most dismal town in Scotland and my home town of Inverness was one of the runners up.

I felt a little indignant for my home when I read this. Inverness is a town with a beautiful river, some beautiful historic buildings and some great views over the firth. If it stops raining long enough, I will take some pictures to prove why I feel that it's reputation as a dismal
failure is not as justified as you would first think.
I am aware that the suburbs are characterless and someone in the 60's thought it would be great to build two big harling covered cubes in front of the castle but surely these past mistakes should be making us strive to do better, not write our towns off.
The inhabitants of John O'Groats, who refused to pick up the award, obviously felt the same way about their home town. However the inhabitants of Denny, one of the other runners up, have accepted the 'Plook on a Plinth' in their place to highlight the need for improvements in their town.
If your town was nominated, or in fact you are from John O'Groats, is it justified or can you defend your town?

When it comes to the likes of Cumbernauld and John o' Groats, it is probably fair enough; bit harsh in the case of Inverness - it's a like/love it or hate it sort of place, personally I like it, with its river setting and churches it reminds me of Perth. The planners in the 1960s didn't do it any favours though, 'doing a Dundee' by ripping out many historic buildings and replacing them with some soulless concrete boxes. At least they kept the characterful Victorian Market.

(BTW I have publicised PBS on facebook and shared my profile page to raise general awareness - hope it helps).

Denny actually wanted the award instead of John o' Groats to kick-start regeneration/redevelopment http://www.thecarbuncles.co.uk/denny.php

There is some truth in the nomination but I really don't think that Inverness is in the same league as some of the new towns, there has been mistake, and unfortunately continue to be, I wait with bated breath to see what is going to replace the old cinema by the river, but there is alot of charming places. On the positive side the nomination may stop people ignoring the problems, which again I think was Denny's intention.

Thanks for the publicity, I have been trying to make some interesting links with other projects and organisations too, Hopefully this will lead to a bit more aqction on the events page always god to know what is happening!

THanks Eric, That is a pretty shocking bit of footage, I hope that redevelopment works. Although basing it arounfd a supermarket isn't alaways the best way of going they do have the money to invest something the council will not.
