PlaceBook Scotland

PlaceBook Scotland: Capture your place in words, pictures, video and music.

How can we make PlaceBook Scotland more widely known?

I am reasonably computer literate and a fairly keen photographer.  I thought I kept reasonably up-to-date on Scottish resources on the Web.  However, I had not heard of PlaceBook Scotland until a friend gave me the book for my Christmas.  I just had to register. What a wonderful resource.

I have sent the Web Address to several friends; but wonder just how widely the site is known and what we can all do to help publicise it more?

Hi Derek,

Well this is the question I really want the answer to and I hope that Placebook members might be the people to answer it.

Regards

Elli

If everyone who currently contributes to the site passed the web address to three or four others - or even better persuaded someone to add it to an existing Website as a link this would help greatly.

It would, I am also keen to hear how you think we could keep people attention, it is something that users are in the best place to comment on.

Elli

If we could encourage people to pass the link on.  I have listed it on a blog with the Scottish Wildlife Trust / Loch of the Lowes blog, as well as sending it to a few friends, and also putting it on to the link page on my church's web site.

I don't know if it would be technically possible for you as administrator to send a blanket e-mail to everyone, say once a month, just highlighting a couple of things that have caught your attention in the previous three or four weeks.  That is only feasible if you can do it in a few minutes.

I know that commercial site, certainly the ones I use, do something like this ona regular [sometimes too regular!] basis.

I can indeed and I think it is a good idea. I've also featured this discussion to see if anyone else has some good ideas.

Add it to your facebook account or MySpace

Interesting question, here are some ideas. More facebook-style features to share photographs and music, videos and blogs/creative writing; more recommendations; word of mouth, someone creative could maybe produce a promo video advertising PBS and its features. What do you think? Like Andy says, add to Facebook or MySpace account is another good idea.
I suppose the major sites like facebook and MySpace etc have a kind of 'critical mass' where they seem to be indispensable, would be good if PBS got to a similar stage of popularity - probably wishful thinking. Have you looked at the likes of Flickr and My Shutterspace photography sites to get ideas on publicity, sharing material?

I passed the link to this site on a popular forum and some photographers took an interest but I don't know if any of them registered?

Also said you don't need to be a good photographer with a super dooper camera, just post pictures using any camera that is of interest to Scotland.

Oh! And what book Derek? :)

the Book was published by the National Trust for Scotland. 'Placebook Scotland: capturing our sense of place'   ISNB 978-1-906431-19-8  and contains some of the text and photographs as on the site prior to late 2010.

Also some of my photographs are in the book   http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1933916 which I completed recently, which can be viewed on-line without purchasing.

There should be a copy of the book in most libraries if you want to have a look at it Margaret or we also sell it on the Scottish Natural Heritage website - www.snh.gov.uk for a very reasonable price. It is a great wee book - if I do say myself - and the chapter introductions are particularly well written ;-D You can have a look on line as well - note to self must put link on site!

I'll look at the website link Derek provided.

You'll need to advertise the books too more thoroughly too :)

When is the next one coming out LOL
